What a Board and Care Home Actually Is
A board and care home is a licensed Residential Care Facility for the Elderly, or RCFE, operating in an actual house on an actual residential street. Not a wing of a building. A house.
Ours are licensed for up to six residents each. That is the whole difference. Your mother is one of six people at the dinner table, and the caregiver serving her knows how she takes her coffee and what she looks like on a good day, which is how you catch a urinary tract infection before it becomes a hospital admission.
Assisted living communities run 60 to 200 residents with apartment-style units, more amenities, and more independence. Skilled nursing facilities provide medical treatment we are not licensed to provide. A board and care home sits between them, and for someone who needs hands-on help with bathing, dressing, and medications every single day, it is frequently the better answer and almost always the quieter one.

And Who They Are Not
Two situations where we will tell you no, and we would rather do it on the first call than after you have driven out for a tour.
Active exit-seeking. Our homes are not secured settings and we do not have locked units. If your loved one is trying to leave the house, a facility with a secured perimeter is the safer answer.
A need for an awake caregiver overnight. A caregiver lives in the house around the clock and responds at any hour, but nighttime supervision is on call rather than continuous. This is the honest tradeoff of the small home model, and it is worth asking every board and care home you tour.
We also do not provide IV therapy, tube feeding, ventilator care, or injectable medications. If any of that describes your situation, call us anyway. We will tell you what kind of setting to look for and, where we can, point you toward specific ones.

We run five licensed board and care homes, also known as Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly (RCFEs), in the quiet foothill neighborhoods of La Verne, Claremont, and Rancho Cucamonga.
Instead of a large commercial building on a busy street, you step into a residential home: the smell of home-cooked meals, fresh flowers, and the comfort of a real neighborhood.
Our family leadership helps coordinate personalized care plans, medication support and communication with physicians, home health and hospice providers within the services permitted in a licensed RCFE.

A caregiver lives on site around the clock, seven days a week, providing supervision and hands-on support with daily living. We do not staff awake overnight caregivers, so nighttime response is on call rather than continuous.

Quality Care That Fits Your Family’s Budget
Our rates are in the hero of this page rather than behind a form: $4,750 a month for a shared room, $5,250 for a private room, plus a one-time $1,000 admission fee. The final figure depends on the level of care, determined during an assessment.
When you compare us to a larger community, ask them the question we put on our own pricing page: what is the base rent, and what would the total be at the highest level of care you offer? That second number is the honest comparison to ours. Several programs can help either way.

Gerry Markie, R.N., opened the first house in Alta Loma in 1999 after decades as a nurse, on the conviction that a senior who needs real daily care should not have to give up living in a real home to get it. Twenty-seven years later, she is still the licensee of record on all five homes.
That sentence is worth more than it looks. When a care home changes hands, the license usually changes hands with it, and so does everything the license represents: the staff, the standards, the person who answers when you call at 9 p.m. Ours never has. Gerry stepped back from daily operations in 2024. Her four children run the homes now, each one a certified administrator, each one a healthcare professional: two registered nurses, a master’s-prepared nurse, and a doctor of physical therapy. When you call the main line, one of them answers. Not a call center, not a placement agency taking a referral fee.
